How Should we tackle Window Blinds?

Lilac Clean

Tools to Clean Blinds Effectively

Regardless of material, there are universal ways to clean blinds that are environmentally friendly and effective.

  1. A Soft Duster.

Any type of feathers, microfiber, cotton cloth, or soft hair duster will work well. Move from side-to-side in the same direction as the slats. Start at the top as dust and/or dirt may fall onto lower slats during cleaning. Another option it using a paint brush. They have soft bristles, come in a variety of sizes, and allow for detailed work if needed.

    • When dusting vertical blinds, move downward along the slat.
  2. Your Vacuum Cleaner.

The brush attachment is a good way to lift dust and then remove it without damage. Follow the slats from side-to-side for the best results. An up and down motion could be harmful and is less effective. TIP: Completely close the slats to reach more surface area.

pH level of Cleaning products

Since we constantly deal with homes, offices, and hospitals who are always worried about the potential harms the chemicals we use in cleaning can cause. There is a misconception about certain products contents. We decided to share with you today the pH levels of the popular cleaning products.

IMG-20160210-WA0005Understanding the importance of pH is essential when choosing cleaning products for a particular job. The pH scale goes from 0-14, 7 being considered neutral. Anything below 7 is considered acidic and anything above 7 is considered alkaline.

Alkaline products are better at cleaning dirt, grease, oils and other organic items. Acid products are better for removing calcium, rust and other mineral non-organic items.

Here is a list of the most common used cleaning products and their pH levels:

– Chlorine bleach (pH 11-13): At the top of the alkaline level, therefore corrosive and to be use with caution and not in all surfaces as these can be damaged.

– Oven cleaner (pH 11-13): The same as bleach, so ideal to cut through grease and grime, but protect the kitchen floor and worktop when using it as they could be damaged.

– Baking soda (pH 8-9): It has enough alkalinity to clean grease and dirt but not enough to label it as a corrosive product, so it is a great option to use at home.

– Washing up liquid (pH 7-8): The neutrality makes this cleaning product ideal for daily cleaning. Most surfaces will not be damaged and it can be used in hundred places around the house, not only to do the washing up.

– Natural stone cleaner (pH 7-10): Most natural stone surfaces can be easily damaged with cleaning products that are too alkaline or too acidic; hence the neutrality on these stone cleaning products.

– Vinegar (pH 3): As a natural product, most would think vinegar is safe to use almost everywhere in the house, but it is not the case. Vinegar is quite acidic so it can damage some delicate surfaces (e.g. wood or limestone). On the other hand, it is great for removing mineral deposits (e.g. lime scale).

– Lemon (pH 3):  Like vinegar, lemon is very acidic. Some surfaces, like drains, will benefit from a good scrub with lemon, but this product can damage other surfaces, so be careful where you use it.

– Toilet bowl cleaner (pH 1-3): Very acidic product, so ideal to remove minerals and other non-organic substances. As it is at  the end of the pH scale, you have to be careful when using it.

Daily Cleaning Routines you can easily Implement

Daily cleaning

First of all you need to do the following tasks in your home every single day
– Clean the toilet
– Open windows and curtains
– Air the bed then make it
– Washing up
– Put washing up away
– Put laundry into laundry bins
– Take rubbish out
– Wipe down kitchen surfaces
– Clean kitchen sink
– Pick up clutter and put it away

If you have pets or children you may also want to –
– Sweep and mop the kitchen
– Vacuum heavily travelled through areas
– Check bedding

This might seem like a big, huge long list but honestly it isn’t. These tasks are the basics and can be slotted in with ease and not only that, once you fit them into your daily cleaning schedule you’ll find you spend far less time cleaning, tidying and organising in the long run.

Each of these basic tasks can be slotted into your morning routine, (almost) without you even noticing. Don’t go jumping in straight away with spring cleans and scrubbing entire rooms but slowly make these tasks fit into your everyday routine  Most of the tasks take around 30 seconds each but can save you hours of hassle and family/flatmate arguments along the way. If you’re a bit worried about doing all of these tasks then add in 2 per week until you’re able to do the whole routine on a daily basis.

How to Deep Clean your Gas Cooker

Dirty, greasy gas burner grates on today’s gas stovetops not only age the appliance, but they also can affect your cooking and present a fire hazard. If you are looking for ways to clean gas stove burners quickly and effectively, we have everything you need to know right here.

The Ammonia Method

  • Place each burner grate into its own gallon-sized zipper lock plastic bag.
  • Add ¼ cup undiluted ammonia.
  • Seal the bag and allow it to sit for several hours or overnight. You may want to put the bags outside in case the ammonia smell leaks out (it’s pretty strong and unpleasant). During this time the fumes will dissolve and loosen the griminess safely from the enameled iron.
  • Remove from bag, wipe off grates, and admire.

The Baking Soda Method

  • Wash all burners with lukewarm water and dishwashing detergent to remove initial film.
  • Make a thick paste of baking soda and water.
  • Coat all burners with paste and let stand for 20 minutes.*
  • Scrub the softened food residue with a sponge and rinse thoroughly.
  • If this method doesn’t work, try the ammonia method.

The Vinegar Method

  • As a way of daily maintenance, spray burners regularly with vinegar.*
  • Allow to sit for 10-15 minutes.
  • Wipe down with a clean cloth.
  • This method is most effective as ongoing maintenance, as it cuts through grease before it has a chance to be baked in. Use this process after cleaning gas stove top with the first two methods.

*Safety First!

If the electric starters (which sit on top of the stove under and to the side of the burner) get wet with any chemical it will fire constantly until the chemical is completely dissolved. Lighting the burner and letting it burn in most cases will not remove the overspray. Many times it takes either letting it fire constantly for 24 to 48 hours or replacing the starter. Use caution and avoid getting the electric starter wet.

The brush attachment is a good way to lift dust and then remove it without damage. Follow the slats from side-to-side for the best results. An up and down motion could be harmful and is less effective. TIP: Completely close the slats to reach more surface area.

    • When vacuuming vertical blinds, move downward along the slat. Using an upward motion can cause the blinds to become unhooked.
    • NOTE: We always recommend using vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters.
  3. A Rubber Sponge.

Known, also, as a dry sponge will safely remove stains, dirt, and dust from both fabric and vinyl blinds. Start by pushing down with less force and increase as warranted. As with other methods, wipe along the slat and start at the top of the blinds.

  4. Spot Cleaning.

Fingerprints, moisture stains, and dirt build-up may need extra work. Use a damp rag and tackle small sections. Gently wipe the area dry with a microfiber cloth to avoid spotting, streaking, or staining of any kind.

TIP: Don’t forget to clean both sides of the blinds. We would hate for anyone to take the time and make the effort of cleaning and later discover they’re only halfway done.

Hard water Stains Removal Tips

Removing hard water stains can be done with several natural cleaners. Start by mixing half water and half Vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture in your tub and shower and wait a few minutes before wiping clean.

You can also try removing hard water stains with a paste made from baking soda and vinegar. Smear the paste over the surface of the stain and let sit for 15 minutes. After the mixture has settled in scrub clean and rinse with water. It’s important that you immediately wipe dry because you don’t want the water sitting on the newly cleaned surface.

Finally you can try removing hard water stains using lemon juice. Spray fresh lemon juice on hard water scale build-up near faucets. Rinse after 10 minutes. Again, make sure to wipe the area clean
